JB: Could you please introduce yourself?
BP: My name in Benjamin Popp. I was born in Bavaria (Germany) in a city called Burghausen. Same for my friend and business partner Florian Ehberger. He has the same roots as me. I´m 31 and he is 30 years old.
JB: When and how did you find your passion for making skateboards?
BP: Well, skateboarding has been always part of our lives. I think active sports in general. Beginning from surfing, snowboarding, wakeboarding and every other board sport. We just love it. I always had a passion for wood working and was interested in interior design. We started beyou like 3 years ago in the shed of my grandma. At this stage we didn’t really focus on making a business out of it. It was just a fun little project at this time. We both worked for a large cooperation since we graduated school. After realising, that this can´t be everything we decided to quit our jobs and went traveling. Stepping out of this comfort zone gave us the necessary motivation and inspiration to start our own project. I truly can remember the day when we decided to go ahead and make this project happen. We´ve been driving along the cost in California. Finally, one and a half years
JB: What did you want do be when you were a kid?
BP: Looking back makes me actually always smile because I truly can see a path. I started really early writing all my ideas down. Creating things out of wood and connection the dots. When I saw my first Star Wars movie, I actually tried afterwards to rebuild one of their space ships. I really started doing it but I got stopped from my dad because he wasn’t really happy that I used his lawnmower engine. I always wanted to be an inventor.
JB: What project(s) are you currently working on?
BP: Currently we are reorganising Beyou. As well we are trying to make our production more sustainable. Connection the dots.
Our mission is to spread and share one of the most important messages in our lives “being yourself” through creating a unique and joyful product. We see each other working on that mission.
BP: Tell us something about your current home, Byron Bay.
TLJ: The stronghold of art, surf, skate, spirituality and healthy living, what a place. We found a house a little bit outside of Byron, surrounded by nature with affordable rent. We are so lucky to be here. The atmosphere, people from all over the globe, a great vibe are making the time to an endless summer here. Well it´s just amazing.
